Volleyball Defeats Salem, Falls to No. 6 Emory on Saturday

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team opened the home portion of its schedule on Saturday with a split against Salem and No. 6 Emory. The Lady Scots prevailed 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-16) against USA South foe Salem before falling to nationally-ranked Emory 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-18) in the day's finale.

With the win over Salem, Covenant (11-10, 8-2 USA South) maintains its lead atop the USA South West Division standings. 

MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Salem 0

Covenant hit .233 as a team and limited visiting Salem to just 15 kills in the match as the Lady Scots took a sweep (25-13, 26-16, 25-16) in Saturday's opener.

Hannah Harris paced the Lady Scots with 13 kills and a .522 hitting percentage, while Schuyler Moore recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs. Allie Jakes had eight kills and three assisted blocks and Jessica Seehorn added seven kills and five digs. Hannah Stewart had a match-high 12 digs in the win.

Covenant produced 18 kills as a team in the opening set and never trailed. The Lady Scots ended the set on a 14-2 scoring run, capped by back-to-back kills from Ginny Moore and Morgan Opgenorth to end the frame.

The Lady Scots continued their scoring spurt into the second set as they scored the first seven points as Ginny Moore tallied a kill and an ace during the stretch. Covenant scored the final four points of the set to take the win and a 2-0 match lead. 

In a tighter third set, Covenant was able to pull away late. The Lady Scots accumulated 19 kills in the game and used an 8-2 run to finish off the sweep.

Kylie Taffer had five kills for Salem (6-13, 1-8 USA South) and Taylor Moulton had 12 assists.

MATCH TWO: Emory 3, Covenant 0

No. 6-ranked Emory used a powerful attack to overcome Covenant 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-18) to conclude Saturday's action at Barnes PE Center.

Sydney Leimbach had nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage, while Jessica Holler had seven kills and hit at a .417 clip to lead Emory (16-3). Sarah Porter totaled 30 assists and seven digs and Becky Breur added 14 digs.

Ginny Moore had 11 kills to lead Covenant. Schuyler Moore tallied 20 assists and six digs. Seehorn registered four kills and 10 digs, while Stewart had 12 digs.

Emory pulled away from Covenant in both the first and second sets to take a 2-0 match lead. In the third, Covenant played even with the visiting Eagles and trailed 19-15 after a Seehorn kill. But Emory responded with a final run to complete the sweep.

Covenant will host LaGrange on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside Barnes PE Center.
