GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Covenant softball team could not stop its recent losing skid on Thursday as the Lady Scots lost a pair of USA South games to Greensboro. The host Pride took game one 9-0 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 7-3 win in game two.
The contests were originally scheduled for March 6, but were postponed due to rain.
Covenant drops to 9-19 overall and 2-16 in USA South play. Greensboro improves to 18-18 and 11-9 in the conference.
Game 1: Greensboro 9, Covenant 0
Covenant was stifled at the plate by Dawn Harris and the host Pride scored six runs in the fourth to come away with a 9-0 victory in five innings.
Harris (8-7) allowed one hit and walked three with three strikeouts on the afternoon and she was backed by an offense that scored nine runs on 15 hits.
Greensboro's Sarah Connolly and Hayley Rumley each homered and Kali Puckett added three hits in four at-bats. Connolly's homer was a three-run shot and she ended the day 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Rumley went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Greensboro scored two runs in the second and one in the third before opening the game up with a six-run fourth inning.
Shannon Schmitt had the lone hit for the Lady Scots. Starting pitcher Tyler Epes (3-6) picks up the loss.
Game 2: Greensboro 7, Covenant 3
Jordan Brett went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, but Greensboro was just too much as the Pride completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-3 victory in game two.
Morgan Lane added two hits and an RBI while Madison Quirk and Schmitt recorded a hit each.
Falling behind 5-0 after four innings, Covenant cut into the deficit with a two-run fifth inning. Kasey Hart worked a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on a single by Lane. After Lane got to third via a wild pitch and another passed ball, Brett drove her in with a single to center field to make it 5-2.
Greensboro answered with two runs in the sixth to gain a 7-2 lead. Brett homered, her third of the year, with two outs in the seventh that made it 7-3. Covenant would get two more runners on with two outs in the seventh before Greensboro reliever Lauren Miller got out of the jam.
Joni Johnson (3-5) made the start and went five innings allowing seven runs, though only four were earned. Cris Gant worked a scoreless inning in relief.
Allyson Yeager went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Greensboro. Rumley and Sarah Tompkins added two RBIs each. Starter Shelby Drummonds (3-4) gets the win after surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings.
Covenant will be back in action on Friday at No. 16-ranked Averett. The doubleheader will start a 10 a.m. as the games were moved up to try and avoid potential rain.
