MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant women's basketball team had a halftime lead but could not hold on to it as host Huntingdon rallied for an 80-68 victory over the Scots on Wednesday night in USA South action.
Covenant drops to 3-21 overall and 2-13 in league play, while Huntingdon goes to 13-11 on the year and 7-8 inside the USA South.
Jessica Bell scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead three Covenant players in double figures on the night. Liz Dougherty scored 13 points to go with three rebounds and two steals, while Abbey Bailey had 11 points and four rebounds. Morgan Woodward tallied seven assists and four rebounds.
Covenant took a 34-28 lead at the half after shooting 48.3 percent (14-of-29) in the first half. Dougherty had all 13 of her points in the period and Woodward dished out five assists. A Dougherty layup with 10:32 left in the half capped a 10-2 scoring run giving the Scots a 20-14 lead. The Scots held Huntingdon scoreless over the final three minutes of the period and a Woodward layup with 1:19 left gave Covenant a 34-28 edge.
The second half belonged to the host Hawks as they shot 44.7 percent over the final 20 minutes and Mackenzie Garmany dropped 15 points. Huntingdon began the half on a 7-0 run to grab a 35-34 lead and never looked back.
Pat Pickens, Huntingdon's new all-time leading scorer, led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Garmany registered 19 points and Tan Munford collected 12 rebounds with eight points. The Hawks controlled the rebounding holding a 51-30 advantage with 29 offensive rebounds leading to 33 second-chance points.
Covenant shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) for the game with six 3-pointers. The Scots finished 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
The 2014-15 season will conclude for the Scots on Saturday when they travel to face USA South foe LaGrange. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
