LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team had three players score in double figures as they hung around with Piedmont, but the visiting Lions came away with 56-53 victory on Wednesday night in USA South action.
Covenant (3-20, 2-12 USA South) trailed for much of the contest, but mounted a late rally. Down 53-44 with four minutes to go, Covenant went on a 9-3 scoring run, capped by a Haley Soles 3-pointer with 59 seconds remaining, to make it 56-53. The Scots would have one last chance down by three with 7.3 seconds left, but the Piedmont defense came up with a steal to seal the victory.
Liz Dougherty and Abbey Bailey each had 12 points to lead Covenant. Bailey scored 10 of her points in the first half and grabbed six rebounds for the night. Soles added 11 points and six assists. Rachel Price and Morgan Woodward both tallied six rebounds, with Woodward also dishing out four assists in her final home game.
Covenant led early on in the opening half as Bailey connected on a jumper to give the Scots a 10-7 lead with 13:54 left in the half. Piedmont rallied and took a 32-25 lead into the halftime break.
Carlie Shields scored 12 points off the bench for Piedmont (16-5, 9-4), while Taylor Swoszowski had nine points and Le'Shaunda Jones and Carly Sales had eight apiece. Julianne Bayer collected 11 rebounds. Piedmont shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) for the game, but was 0-of-13 from 3-point land. The Lions held a 42-39 rebounding edge.
The Scots hit 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the field with five triples and had 13 assists on those 20 made field goals.
Covenant will have a week off before traveling to Montgomery, Alabama to face USA South foe Huntingdon on Feb. 18. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. EST.
