Sewanee Rallies Past Women's Hoops

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's basketball team could not hold on to a nine-point third quarter lead as they fell 75-68 at Sewanee on Tuesday night at Juhan Gymnasium.

The loss drops Covenant to 1-1 on the year, while Sewanee improves to 2-1 overall.

Four players scored in double figures for the Scots led by Kaley Hallmark and Aleigha Williams with 14 points apiece. Rachel Price added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Joanna Smith poured in 11 points and nine boards. Bekah Walter recorded nine points off the bench.

Sewanee took a slim 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Covenant went on a 10-2 run to being the second period and grab a 23-17 lead after a Williams jumper with 6:15 left. The teams went into halftime knotted at 33.

Covenant again had a strong start to a quarter as it stretched its lead to 43-37 with 6:35 remaining after a Hallmark layup. After Sewanee regained the lead momentarily, the Scots rattled off 10 straight points, with Hallmark supplying five of those points, to take a 53-46 lead. Covenant extended the margin to 60-51 on another Hallmark jumper near the end of the quarter.

But Sewanee rallied in the fourth quarter and took the lead for good on Corey Caulder's 3-pointer with 3:26 left in the period. The host Tigers then made free throws down the stretch to hold off the Scots.

The Scots shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field with six 3-pointers. Sewanee made 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from the floor but was able to turn 26 Covenant turnovers into 27 points.
