Scots Late Goal Forces 2-2 Draw With Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- After 110 minutes of play on Wednesday evening, the Covenant men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw with Huntingdon in USA South action.

The Scots are now sitting at 3-8-2 overall and 2-2-2 inside the USA South, while the Hawks' record is now 2-8-2 and 1-4-2.

Huntingdon took a very early lead as Brendon Van Emelen scored barely two-and-a-half minutes into the match. Covenant had five shots on goal in the first half, including two in the 32nd minute by Mike Arango and Andrew Lowe, but the Scots remained scoreless at halftime.

In the second half, Covenant was able to tie the match in the 54th minute on a penalty kick by senior Noah Wiersema - his fourth goal of the season.

Huntingdon retook the lead in the 70th minute, as Jared Bodenbender scored his first goal of the season off an Andres Quintero assist. The Hawks held the lead until the last five minutes of the second half, as Arango scored his second goal in as many matches to knot the score. Wiersema earned the assist on the equalizer.

As overtime played out neither team was able to capitalize and receive the win. During overtime, only two shots were out on goal, one by Arango and one by Huntingdon's Zach ben Besten. Overall, Huntingdon outshot Covenant 23-20, with 11 shots on goal in comparison to 9 by Covenant.

Covenant keeper Jonathan Crossman started in place of Daniel Kubin and played the entire match, making seven saves. Huntingdon keeper Dominique Thomas saved nine shots on goal.

UP NEXT

The Scots will play Greensboro on the road on Monday, October 19th. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m..
