Softball Splits with Mary Baldwin on Senior Day

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Three seniors had their day on Saturday as the Covenant softball team held its Senior Day. The Lady Scots split a doubleheader with USA South foe Mary Baldwin. The visiting Fighting Squirrels took game one 9-8 in extra innings, but Covenant bounced back to claim a 15-6 win in game two.

Seniors Chandler Shepherd, Meagan Hess and Lauren Johns were all recognized for the accomplishments and dedication to the softball program after the games concluded.

Covenant goes to 11-25 overall and 4-20 inside the USA South. Mary Baldwin goes to 5-27 for the season and 2-22 in league action.

GAME ONE: Mary Baldwin 9, Covenant 8 (F-8 innings)

Jordan Brett and Morgan Lane both homered and Covenant rallied late to tie the score, but Mary Baldwin earned a 9-8 win in extra innings in the day's first game.

Brett finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Lane went 2-for-4 with two runs and a solo home run. Hess was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Madison Quirk went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Kaitlyn Sirmons added two hits in four trips to the plate.

Covenant had a 4-0 lead after three innings of play. The Lady Scots got on the board first in the second inning as Hess drew a bases-loaded walk. Covenant scored three times in the third with RBI singles from Quirk, Cori Hilt and Hess to go ahead 4-0. Quirk added another RBI single in the fourth to put the Lady Scots up 5-2.

Mary Baldwin scored four times in the sixth to grab an 8-5 lead. Lane and Brett hit back-to-back solo home runs to get Covenant within 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Scots then tied the score in the seventh with two outs on a Brett double that plated Hess to send the game into extra innings.

Mary Baldwin scored the go-ahead run on Morgan Tully's RBI double in the eighth and the Fighting Squirrels would hang on for the victory.

Hilt (6-13) gets the loss for Covenant as she went all eight innings allowing five earned runs. Olivia Compton (4-9) picks up the win in relief for Mary Baldwin as she threw the final five innings. Tully went 4-for-5 with three RBIs for the visitors.

GAME TWO: Covenant 15, Mary Baldwin 6

Covenant bounced back from a tough loss in game one to come away with a 15-6 win in five innings in game two.

The Lady Scots scored 15 times on 13 hits. Brett had another phenomenal game going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored. Sirmons finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Lane also went 2-for-4 to go along with two RBIs and two runs. Nicole White added two hits in three at-bats with a run and an RBI. Kendall Whann went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Covenant scored five runs in the first and nine more in the second to put the game out of reach. Johns had an RBI double and Sirmons followed with a two-run double to cap the five-run first inning. In the second, Covenant scored nine times on seven hits to go ahead 14-2. Lane had a two-run single, while Sirmons, Morgan Strennen and Brett had run-producing singles.

Brett capped the scoring with a solo home run, her fourth of the season, in the fourth inning.

Hannah Rogers (5-12) gets her fifth win of the season as she went all five innings allowing three earned runs on six hits. Mary Baldwin starter Janie Brothers (1-16) records the loss.

Covenant will play at nationally-ranked Emory on Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta. Game one starts at 2 p.m.
