Softball Suffers Two Losses at 18th-ranked Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. -- No. 18-ranked Emory was too much to overcome for the Covenant softball team as the Lady Scots fell twice on Tuesday afternoon. Covenant outhit Emory in game one, but fell 9-2 and the host Eagles completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in the day's second game.

Covenant drops to 11-27 overall and will finish the season next Tuesday with a pair of home games with Sewanee. Emory goes to 33-6 on the season.

Reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, Jordan Brett extended her hitting streak to 12 games by going a combined 4-for-7 in the two games with a run scored. Brett is batting .654 over the last eight games.

The Lady Scots outhit Emory 10-9 in the first game, but only managed two runs in the sixth inning. In that sixth inning, Kendall Whann doubled home Brett and Cori Hilt followed with a run-scoring single that plated Whann that cut the Emory lead to 6-2.

The Eagles got two home runs and six RBIs from Megan Light to aid in the victory. Emory scored three runs in the first and added another in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Emory tacked on two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the final tally.

Cori Hilt (6-14) picks up the loss for the Lady Scots after she went six innings allowing six earned runs. Amanda Kardys (22-1) surrendered two runs on 10 hits in the complete-game victory.

In the second game, Covenant was limited to two hits, a double by Madison Quirk and a single by Brett, as Emory starter Brittany File went the distance in the 9-1 Eagles win.

Covenant's run came in the fourth inning when Quirk doubled home Lauren Johns, who reached on an error, that cut the Emory lead to 4-1.

Light added three more hits and three RBIs to lead Emory offensively. Hannah Rogers (5-13) gets the loss for the Lady Scots, while File (9-4) is credited with the win for Emory.

Covenant will face non-conference foe Sewanee next Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
