Lady Scots Softball Defeated Twice at N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Covenant softball team dropped two more USA South contests at North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. Covenant fell 6-1 in the day's first game and then lost 4-3 on a walk-off double in the second game.

Covenant falls to 8-18 on the season and 3-13 inside the USA South. N.C. Wesleyan moves to 12-12 overall and 7-5 in the league.

In the first game, Madison Quirk homered and went 1-for-3 but the N.C. Wesleyan scored five runs in the first inning and held on for the victory. The homer for Quirk was the first of her collegiate career.

Cori Hilt (5-9) started and picked up the loss for the Lady Scots. N.C. Wesleyan's Leanna Fann (5-5) went the distance and recorded the win as she allowed one run on six hits.

Chandler Shepherd went 2-for-2 while Morgan Lane, Jordan Brett and Hilt each had a hit apiece.

In game two, Covenant held a 3-2 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, but the host Bishops received a walk-off two-run double from Maria Seay in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Scots scored two runs in the first inning when Lauren Johns drove in Nicole White and Brett scored later in the inning when Kaitlyn Sirmons reached on an error. N.C. Wesleyan tied the score at 2-2 with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first.

Covenant took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning as White singled home Morgan Strennen.

Hannah Rogers (3-9) pitched valiantly but picks up the loss. Rogers went 6.1 innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts. Jasmine Edgren (5-4) gets the win for N.C. Wesleyan as she gave up two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Lane went 2-for-4 in game two, while Meagan Hess finished 2-for-3. White, Johns and Sirmons each recorded one hit.

Covenant will be back on Lookout Mountain on Wednesday for a USA South doubleheader against Huntingdon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
