Huntingdon Sweeps Lady Scots

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team could not snap its losing streak on Wednesday afternoon as the Lady Scots fell twice to Huntingdon, the USA South's second place team. The visiting Hawks took game one 10-1 in five innings and then claimed the second game 8-0 in six innings.

Covenant falls to 8-20 overall for the season and 3-15 in league play. Huntingdon improves to 17-10 and 13-3 in the USA South, good for second behind Piedmont.

The first game was a tightly played contest until the fifth inning. After falling behind 1-0, Covenant rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan Brett doubled to lead off the inning and later advanced to third when Lauren Johns reached on a fielding error by the Huntingdon second baseman. Madison Quirk followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field that enabled Brett to score from third.

But in the top of the fifth, Covenant committed five errors and the visiting Hawks took advantage of the mistakes scoring nine runs on five hits to take a commanding 10-1 lead.

Cori Hilt (5-10) went all five innings and allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits. Katy Messick (6-2) gets the win for Huntingdon after she allowed one run on three hits in five innings of work.

Brett, Chandler Shepherd and Meagan Hess had one hit apiece for the Lady Scots. Gabby Alcantar led Huntingdon by going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in the first game.

In the day's second game, Huntingdon scored singled runs in the first and third innings before opening the game up with a five-run fifth inning as the Hawks took an 8-0 win.

Jade Reynolds went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run for Huntingdon. Holly Ostrander also went 3-for-3 in the victory.

Morgan Lane had two of Covenant's six hits as she finished 2-for-3. Brett, Johns and Quirk each had a hit apiece. Hannah Rogers (3-10) took the loss after going 4.1 innings and surrendering four earned runs.

Huntingdon's Brooke Meadows (8-3) notched the win with five scoreless innings. Anna Stephens threw one scoreless frame for the Hawks.

Covenant's doubleheader scheduled for Thursday with Sewanee was rescheduled for Tuesday, April 15. The Lady Scots will host Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m.
