Strong 2nd Half Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn.-- The Covenant women's basketball team played Sewanee close for most of the first half before the host Tigers went on a 17-0 run to break the game open and put the Scots in a hole they would not be able to climb out of in a 72-58 loss.

Covenant falls to 0-2, while Sewanee stays undefeated at 2-0.

The Scots had a 6-2 lead before a 12-2 run by Sewanee turned a four point lead into a six point deficit early in the first half. Covenant would close the gap to one at 14-13, but would never lead again.

With just over three minutes to go and leading 20-16, the Tigers scored the last 13 points of the half to break the game open. Sewanee would also score the first four points of the second half, giving them a 17-0 run over the span of 4:08.

Covenant tried to claw their way back in it, going on an 11-2 run a closing the deficit to 39-29 on a layup by Liz Dougherty, assisted by Morgan Woodward, but Sewanee responed with a 3-pointer by Kayla Sewell on the ensuing possession to swing the momentum back into the Tigers' favor. The Scots couldn't get within 11 for the remainder of the game.

In the second half alone, Covenant scored 42 points and shot 40 percent from the field with six 3-pointers.

Dougherty led the team with 14 points to go with five rebounds, while shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Three other Scots players scored in double-figures with Woodward, Haley Soles, and Abbey Bailey each netting 10. Bailey added 10 rebounds to her total giving her the first double-double of her career, while Woodward chipped in six assists.

For Sewanee, Sewell led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from beyond the 3-point arc. She also had 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in an all-around effort. Jamie Chauvin had 16 points to go with four steals.
