FAYETEVILLE, N.C.-- Playing in the first round of the USA South conference tournament, the Covenant women's soccer team, seeded sixth, fell to third-seeded Methodist 1-0 in a tight defensive match in Fayetteville.
The loss knocks the Lady Scots (9-10-1, 7-4 USA South) out of the tournament, ending their season. Methodist (11-5-2, 9-1-2 USA South) will move on to play No. 7 seed N.C. Wesleyan, who shocked second-seeded Piedmont by winning in penalty kicks.
Cassie Pointdexter scored in the 49th minute as the two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first half. For Pointdexter, it was her seventh goal and proved to be the decisive tally.
For Covenant, they turned in a solid effort in keeping with a team that had beat them 3-1 just over three weeks ago, but were unable to muster enough offense to steal a road victory. The Lady Scots were only outshot 12-8, but Methodist had 10 of its shots on target while Covenant had one.
Ruth Terry and Bethany Logan each had three shots, but weren't able to center any of them to challenge Methodist keeper Taylor Ross. Ross was required to only make just one save, on a shot by Covenant's Jessica Rowe, to record the shutout.
Lady Scots keeper Lucy Johnson was much more busy, as she had to make nine saves on 10 shots. Johnson finishes her career with 192 saves, a save percentage of .800, and a 22-17-3 overall record with eight shutouts. Six of her shutouts came this season.
