Scots Display Fireworks in 5-0 Win over LaGrange

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's soccer team capped off Homecoming 2014 in style on Saturday in front of a capacity crowd at Scotland Yard. Snoopy Davidson scored twice and the Scots blew past USA South foe LaGrange 5-0 before a fireworks display after the contest.

The win keeps Covenant as the only unbeaten team in USA South play at 3-0-1. The Scots improve to 7-3-2 overall, while LaGrange drops to 1-10-1 and 0-4 in league play.

Seeing his first action in more than two weeks due to an injury, Davidson sparked the Scots to their highest goal output of the season. Davidson recorded his first goal in the 24th minute when he received a throw-in from Roy Anderson and buried a shot past LaGrange keeper AJ Wilson.

Covenant went ahead 2-0 a minute later when Joe Friesen, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, found the back of the net, assisted by Ian Meredith. The score was Friesen's sixth of the year, which leads the team.

In the second half, Davidson registered his second score of the night in the 64th minute when he split two LaGrange defenders and was able to get enough on a shot to slide it past Wilson to make it 3-0. Davidson now has four goals on the year.

Covenant would pile on later in the second period as Hunter Brock scored for the second time this season, assisted by Andrew Lowe, in the 75th minute. David Huertas capped the scoring with a spectacular goal on a diving header off a Noah Wiersema free kick in the 79th minute. The score for Huertas was his first of the year.

Covenant peppered LaGrange keeper Wilson all night as the Scots held a 35-7 advantage in shots taken, including 18 on goal. Wilson made 13 saves for the Panthers. Daniel Kubin and Jonathan Crossman combined for the shutout, with Crossman making one save.

The Scots will be on the road next weekend for two USA South matches. Covenant faces Methodist on Friday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m., followed by a contest at North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.
