FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant men's soccer team fell for the first time in USA South play this season as they were defeated by Methodist 1-0 on Friday afternoon in Fayetteville, N.C.
Covenant, currently ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA South Atlantic region rankings, drops to 3-1-1 in conference play and 7-4-2 overall. The Scots were the last remaining unbeaten team in USA South play heading into Friday's contest. Methodist improves to 8-2-1 on the season and 3-2 in league play.
It was a tightly played defensive battle for most of the match as the two teams combined for only 13 shots, six on target, on the afternoon. Covenant keeper Daniel Kubin made three saves while his counterpart, Alex Rabone, made a pair of saves for the host Monarchs.
The lone score of the match came in the 59th minute when Methodist's Stefan Cyvin was able to get one by Kubin, assisted by David Korneliusson, to put the Monarchs ahead 1-0. The goal was Cyvin's eighth of the season, tied for second-most in the USA South. Kubin had not allowed a goal in over 247 minutes of play before Cyvin's score.
The Scots searched for the equalizer in the final minutes, but the Methodist defense stood tall. Hudson Brock had a shot on goal in the 89th minute of play, but Rabone was there to make the save.
Methodist outshot the Scots 10-3 overall, while each team had three shots on goal. Snoopy Davidson, Brock and Joel Friesen each had one attempt for Covenant.
The Scots will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Rocky Mount, N.C., to face North Carolina Wesleyan. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
