LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Looking to keep their perfect conference record intact, the Covenant women's soccer team used goals from six different players to blowout visiting Mary Baldwin 6-0 on Friday evening at Scotland Yard.
With the victory, Covenant moves to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Lady Scots currently sit in a tie atop the USA South standings at 3-0 with Averett. Mary Baldwin drops to 5-4 on the year and 0-4 in conference.
Covenant wasted no time in asserting its control on Friday. Bethany Logan notched her fourth goal of the season in the 5th minute of play as she put the ball into the net off a rebound on a shot attempt from Anne Charlotte Strawbridge. It was the first of many goals to come for the home team.
Strawbridge found the back of the net in the 21st minute after she corralled a deflected ball outside the box and blasted a shot into the upper right corner to give the Lady Scots a 2-0 lead. The goal was Strawbridge's third of the season.
A pair of freshman netted goals before halftime. Anna Porch got her second score of the season in the 25th minute off an assist from Ally Jennings. In the 35th minutes of action, Madison Smartt chipped a shot over the keeper's outstretched arms from roughly 10 yards out to make it 4-0. Smartt's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
In the second half, Rachel Bernard headed in a goal off a corner kick from Logan in the 60th minute for her third score of the season. Freshman Katherine Keller capped the scoring outburst as she tapped in a shot after it was deflected by the keeper in the 76th minute for her first collegiate goal.
Covenant maintained possession on the offensive side of the pitch for the majority of the contest as the Lady Scots outshot Mary Baldwin 34-0, including 18-0 in shots on goal. Covenant also had a 13-2 edge in corner kicks.
Covenant played both keepers, Lucy Johnson and Hannah Bales, but neither was forced into much play. Mary Baldwin's Sara Brown made 12 saves for the Fighting Squirrels.
The women will host USA South member Meredith in a crucial conference tilt on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Scotland Yard. Both teams are undefeated in conference play.
