LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Playing their second conference match in as many days, the Covenant women's soccer team took a 1-0 halftime lead but visiting Meredith scored two goals in the second period to come away with a 2-1 win on Saturday evening at Scotland Yard.
The loss for Covenant is its first in USA South play this season as the Lady Scots move to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in league play. Meredith, which has not lost a game in almost a month, goes to 6-1-4 overall and 4-0-1 in the USA South.
Covenant got on the board first in the 15th minute of play. Freshman Andrea Hunt took a free kick from just inside midfield and launched it into the box. The kick sailed over Meredith defensive players and Ruth Terry snuck in behind to kick the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The score was Terry's third of the season and the assist was Hunt's first of the year.
The Lady Scots would take that 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the visiting Avenging Angels knotted the score in the 50th minute when Meredith McCarty found the lower right corner of the net from inside the box, assisted by Danielle Lee. The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 82nd minute when Meghan Ingram converted on a breakaway opportunity as she finished the shot into the left corner of the net. Lee was also credited with an assist on the second goal.
One of Covenant's best opportunity to score in the second half came in the 55th minute when Anna Porch received a cross heading into the box, but the freshman's shot attempt went just high over the crossbar. The Lady Scots took nine shots in the second period, including three on goal.
The Lady Scots outshot Meredith 11-9, but the Avenging Angels had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Lucy Johnson made four saves for Covenant while Kelsey Hopper tallied three for Meredith.
Covenant will continue USA South action on Wednesday evening when rival Maryville comes to Scotland Yard. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
