FERRUM, Va. -- Four first half goals, from four different players, was enough for the Covenant men's soccer team to defeat USA South foe Ferrum 4-1 on Saturday night. The win pushes the Scots to 5-2-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Ferrum drops to 4-4 and 1-1 in league play.

The Scots wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. Garrison Dale got the scoring going as he found the back of the net in the fourth minute of play for his second score of the season.

Joel Friesen would give Covenant a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute when he converted on an opportunity and got his shot past Ferrum keeper Justin Robinson for his third goal of the season and second this week.

Ferrum would respond with a goal of its own in the 35th minute from Aaron Gustine, but Covenant would strike twice before halftime. Michael Arango netted his second goal of the week in the 36th minute to give the Scots a 3-1 edge. A few moments later, Arango assisted on a goal by Barrett Schmidt, the first collegiate score for the senior, in the 39th minute that gave Covenant a 4-1 lead heading into halftime.

Both teams had shots on goal in the second half, but could not one into the net.

Covenant keeper Shuler Polk made five saves in 90 minutes of action. The Scots outshot Ferrum 14-9 and 8-6 in shots on goal. Covenant also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Matt Hudnut led Covenant with three shots taken.

The Scots will go out of conference in their next match as they travel to Atlanta to take on Oglethorpe on Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
