Late Rally Falls Short, Scots Defeated by Campbellsville

MASON, Ohio -- The Covenant baseball team could not get the bats going soon enough as a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning was not enough to overcome a 5-0 deficit and Campbellsville claimed a 5-3 win.

Covenant drops to 0-2 in pool play and must win its final two games to have a chance to advance to the semifinal round. Campbellsville is now 3-0.

Covenant starting pitcher Jonah Paul pitched effectively, but was not given much wiggle room as Campbellsville starter Sean Bouthilette kept the Scots' offense in check.

The Tigers got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Keaton Neeb and Carlos Torres each had RBI hits in the frame. Campbellsville added a run in the third on an Aaron Schwoebel sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 with two runs, one being unearned in the fifth.

Covenant did not get a hit until the fifth inning when Perry Rigby lined a single to left field. The Scots trailed 5-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, but scored three runs and had the potential tying run at the plate.

Sterling Witt doubled to right field with one out and was followed by another Rigby single to put runners at first and third with one away. Paul Phillips tripled to the right-center field gap to score both Witt and Rigby to make it 5-2. K.C. Simons sliced the Tigers' lead more with a single to left field scoring Phillips to pull the Scots to within 5-3. But Bouthilette worked out of the jam to secure the win for the Tigers.

Paul (2-1) went all seven innings allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out three. Rigby and Phillips each had two of Covenant's six hits.

Bouthilette (5-5) also went the distance as he allowed three earned runs on six hits and punched out five. Neeb and Torres both had two hits for the Tigers.

Covenant takes on Emmanuel at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
