Scots Start Hot, But Fall to Trevecca

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team scored three runs in the first inning and another in the second, but ultimately fell 15-5 to host Trevecca Nazarene in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The loss eliminates the Scots from the tournament. Covenant is now 28-15 on the season. Trevecca advances to the championship round to face top-seed Campbellsville later on Saturday.

Covenant got off to a tremendous start. As the designated visiting team, the Scots began the top of the first with consecutive doubles from Will Cleland and David Lockwood with Lockwood's plating Cleland with the first run of the game. Two batters later, Sterling Witt lined a single to right-center field that scored Lockwood. Perry Rigby followed with a ringing triple to center field to bring home Witt and give the Scots a 3-0 lead.

After Covenant starting pitcher Spencer Smith set down the Trevecca lineup 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, the Scots added a run in the top of the second. K.C. Simons led the inning off with a chopper over the head of the Trevecca third baseman for a single. Simons advanced to second and crossed home on a Lockwood triple off the wall in left field to make it 4-0.

But the Trevecca bats came alive in its half of the second. The Trojans scored eight runs on seven hits to take an 8-4 lead after two innings. Trevecca continued to score with three runs in the fourth inning and then plated four runs in the fifth to earn the run-rule.

Lockwood finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Witt added two hits in three at-bats with a pair of runs batted.

Trevecca had five players earn two or more base hits as the Trojans pounded out 15 hits.

This marks the second straight season that Covenant has finished third at the region tournament. The last four years, Covenant has placed third or better.
