MACON, Ga. -- Sophomore Cori Hilt tossed a five-inning no-hitter in game one and the Covenant softball team got back in the win column in a big way on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated GSAC foe Wesleyan 18-0 and 16-1.
Hilt's no-hitter is the fifth such in Covenant history, but it marks the first time that it has been done by a single pitcher. The last time it happened was on March 19, 2012 when Chelsea Krafft and Beth Harris combined to no-hit Rust.
Hilt (3-10) faced 16 batters, just one over the minimum, while striking out six and walking one in her five innings. She then got plenty of offensive support from her teammates.
Courtney Wagoner and Morgan Lane was each 4-for-5 with two RBIs apiece. Jenni Jobe and Madison Quirk each had three runs batted in while Jobe had three hits and Quirk two. Every Covenant starter got at least one hit and one run scored. Lauren Johns went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Chandler Shepherd was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The 22 hits are a season high for the Lady Scots.
Covenant scored eight runs in the top of the first. Johns, Lane, Kendall Whann, and Job each had run-scoring hits in the inning which saw 12 batters come to bat. The Lady Scots added nine more runs in the second inning as Jobe had a two-run single.
In the second game, it was more of the same for the Lady Scots. Plenty of offense and stellar pitching.
Hannah Rogers (1-9) notched her first career victory with a three-hitter in five innings. Rogers allowed one run and struck out four.
Wagoner launched two home runs, her second and third of the season, and had four RBIs on three hits. Every starter but one got a base hit. Lane finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and RBIs while Jobe, Quirk, Morgan Strennen, and Meagan Hess each had two hits. Jobe, Lane, and Strennen also added two RBIs and, even though she did not record a hit, Whann also drove in two runs.
Covenant scored in every inning. The Lady Scots struck for three in the first thanks to RBI singles from Wagoner and Lane. Covenant then added six more in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, and two more in the fifth for the final tally.
Covenant (4-22, 3-7 GSAC) will be back on the field tomorrow afternoon when they host Trevecca Nazarene for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 4 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
