Softball Loses Twice to Trevecca Nazarene

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A day after gaining their first doubleheader sweep of the season, the Covenant softball team could not keep the momentum going as they were swept by Trevecca Nazarene by scores of 15-4 and 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The visiting Trojans tallied 30 hits on the day as they improve to 14-9 on the season. Covenant falls to 4-24 overall.

Game One: Trevecca Nazarene 15, Covenant 4

Jenni Jobe went 2-for-2, but Trevecca scored early and often as they claimed a 15-4 win in the opening game.

The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first as they took advantage of two errors and run-scoring singles from Mackenzie Leding and Lindsey Stephens.

Covenant would respond with two runs in its half of the inning. Chandler Shepherd walked to lead off the frame and later scored on a Lauren Johns bunt single. Morgan Lane then drove in Jobe when she reached on a fielding error by the Trojans pitcher to make it 3-2.

After Trevecca added four more runs in the second, the Lady Scots scored twice in the bottom of the second. Kendall Whann tripled to right field and was driven in by Shepherd on a single. Shepherd would later score on a Courtney Wagoner RBI fielder's choice to cut the Trojans' lead to 7-4.

But Trevecca proved to be too much as the visitors scored six runs in the third and two more in the fifth to pull away.

Shepherd finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Morgan Strennen also added a hit for Covenant. Starter Cori Hilt (3-11) picks up the loss for the Lady Scots.

Trevecca starting pitcher Stephens (6-2) is credited with the win as she four earned runs in three innings. Breanna Zeis went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored at the plate for the Trojans.

Game Two: Trevecca Nazarene 8, Covenant 1

The Lady Scots rebounded with a solid performance in game two, but again Trevecca got its bats going as the Trojans completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory.

Covenant took a 1-0 lead after one inning as Shepherd led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a walk to Jobe, and would score on a two-out RBI single from Lane.

Hannah Rogers got the start in the circle for the Lady Scots and pitched effectively. The freshman threw two scoreless innings until the Trojans broke through in the third. Still, Rogers (1-10) allowed just four earned runs in seven innings while striking out one.

In that third inning, Trevecca would take the lead for good. A Covenan throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed two runs to cross, then Zeis and Stephens added RBI base hits to give Trevecca a 4-1 lead.

The Trojans would extend their lead with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Shepherd and Lane recorded two hits apiece while Meagan Hess registered the only other hit for the Lady Scots.

Kelsey Kemp (3-2) notches the win for the Trojans as she went seven innings striking out 12 and surrendering one run on five hits. Zeis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Stephens contributed three hits.

Covenant will hold its Senior Day activities on Saturday afternoon after they host Wesleyan for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1 p.m.
