LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Covenant softball team concluded the home portion of its schedule with 15-0 and 14-1 victories over GSAC member Wesleyan.
The day also saw three seniors, Courtney Wagoner, Jenni Jobe, and Morgan Booker, say their farewells. The three players have been key to the success of the softball program as all three contributed to NCCAA National Tournament appearances the last three seasons and each won multiple individual awards.
The seniors went out with a bang on the field as well. Jobe went 4-for-6 with six RBIs and four runs scored on the day, while Wagoner was 3-for-4 with six RBIs and a pair of runs scored as the Lady Scots cruised to the doubleheader sweep.
The first game saw Covenant score 14 times on 14 hits, led by Jobe's three knocks. Chandler Shepherd, Wagoner, Morgan Lane, Kendall Whann, and Meagan Hess each had two hits. Whann connected on her first career home run, a three-run shot to left field, in the bottom of the fourth.
Covenant scored three times in the first as Jobe and Wagoner had run-scoring hits and Madison Quirk added a sacrifice fly. The Lady Scots extended their lead to 6-0 in the second with RBI singles from Shepherd and Wagoner. A pair of wild pitches sandwiched around a Jobe two-run triple gave Covenant a 10-0 lead after three innings.
Cori Hilt and Hannah Rogers combined to toss a two-hitter for Covenant. Hilt (4-11) picks up the win as she went three innings, striking out four and allowing one hit. Rogers followed with two innings of one-hit ball and two punch outs.
In the second game, Ellie Groenendyk and Hilt combined to allow just one hit. Hilt started and gave up the lone hit in two innings. Groenendyk (1-2) notches the victory as she threw three hitless innings.
The offense was also in full force in the second game.
Covenant recorded just six hits, but drew 12 walks and made those hits count. Wagoner drove in four runs, with two coming on a double to left-center field in the third inning, to lead the Lady Scots.
Shepherd and Jobe each had two RBIs, while Johns and Quirk had one apiece.
Again, Covenant struck early as they scored a run in the first on a double steal. The Lady Scots added five runs on two hits, a Morgan Strennen single and a Shepherd RBI single, to go ahead 6-0 after the second inning.
The Lady Scots poured on six more runs in the third with Wagoner and Johns producing RBI hits.
Strennen and Hess scored three runs apiece while Shepherd and Jobe crossed the plate twice each.
Covenant will hit the road next week when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on Huntingdon on Tuesday. Game one is slated for 3 p.m.
