LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team dropped a pair of games to GSAC foe Agnes Scott on Wednesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain. Agnes Scots took game one 9-7 before claiming the sweep with a 10-0 victory in the second game.
Covenant falls to 2-18 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while Agnes Scott goes to 8-5 on the season and 4-2 in league play.
Game One: Agnes Scott 9, Covenant 7
The Lady Scots scored five runs in the sixth inning to cut an 8-2 defitict to just 8-7, but Agnes Scott held on for the victory in game on of the doubleheader.
Covenant struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Jenni Jobe RBI single that plated Chandler Shepherd. Agnes Scott would answer with two in the second and one in the third to take the lead.
Madison Quirk laced a double to center field in the third inning that scored Morgan Lane to cut it to a 3-2 game.
The Scotties would open up the game in the final three innings as they scored six runs, four in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Covenant would score five times on three hits in the sixth to hang around. Courtney Wagoner delivered a bases loaded single to left field that brought home Morgan Strennen. Lane and Quirk followed with conecutive two-run doubles as the Lady Scots cut it to 8-7.
Quirk finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Lane also went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and runs batted in, while Shepherd and Cori Hilt added two hits each. Covenant banged out 13 hits in the game.
Hilt (2-8) gets the loss in the pitching circle for Covenant. She allowed all nine runs, but just four were earned, on 16 hits.
Agnes Scott's Tiffany Cain (3-3) receives the win even though she gave up seven earned runs on 13 hits. Ashley Monsrud finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Scotties.
Game Two: Agnes Scott 10, Covenant 0
For as much hitting the Lady Scots did in game one, it did not carry over into the second game. Agnes Scott starter Julia Blattner surrendered just four hits as the Scotties took a 10-0 victory to complete the sweep.
Blattner (2-1) went all six innings and struck out two to pick up the win. Agnes Scott scored single runs in the first three innings and then added seven runs over the final two frames to pull away from Covenant.
Covenant starter Hannah Rogers (0-8) pitched effectively early on. Rogers allowed those three runs over the first four innings. She struck out one and walked one while allowing eight earned runs.
Shepherd, Jobe, Wagoner, and Quirk were the only Lady Scots to earn base hits in the game. Wagoner also drew a base on balls.
Melanie Ennis went 5-for-5 with four RBIs to pace Agnes Scott's 18-hit attack.
Covenant will have a few days off for Easter Break before returning to play next Monday when they host GSAC member Huntingdon on Lookout Mountain. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
