WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Covenant softball team opened up conference play at Salem on Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem. The Lady Scots defeated the Spirits 9-2 in the opening game before falling 6-0 in the second game.
Covenant is 1-1 in the GSAC and 2-14 overall, while Salem goes to 2-4 in league play and 5-13 overall.
Game One: Covenant 9, Salem 2
Morgan Lane and Courtney Wagoner had two RBIs apiece and the Lady Scots scored seven runs over the last two innings to earn a 9-2 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Covenant scored five runs in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Wagoner drew a bases loaded walk and Lane followed with a two-run single that scored both Jenni Jobe and Kendall Whann. Wagoner would later score on a fielding error by the Salem pitcher and Morgan Strennen capped the scoring outbreak in the inning with another bases loaded walk to give Covenant a 7-2 lead.
The Lady Scots added a pair of runs in the seventh on another Salem fielding error and a wild pitch.
Jobe, Lane, and Wagoner each had two hits as Covenant had 11 hits as a team. Quirk and Strennen also had RBIs.
Cori Hilt picks up the pitching win for Covenant as she went all seven innings allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out four.
Game Two: Salem 6, Covenant 0
In game two, Covenant managed just four hits as the hosts secured a doubleheader split with a 6-0 victory.
Chandler Shepherd went 2-for-3 for the Lady Scots who also got hits from Jobe and Quirk.
Salem scored single runs in the first and second innings before opening the game up with a three-run fifth inning.
Hilt receives the loss in game two. She went six innings surrendering 10 hits and five earned runs.
Covenant is back in action next Friday when they host Emory on Lookout Mountain for a doubleheader. Game one starts at 2 p.m.
