CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The 2013 softball season got underway for the Covenant Lady Scots on Friday evening in downtown Chattanooga. Visiting Bluefield took game one of the doubleheader 11-0, before hanging on for a 10-9 win in game two to sweep the Lady Scots.
Game One: Bluefield 11, Covenant 0
Covenant struggled to get anything going offensively and Bluefield cruised to an 11-0 win.
Bluefield banged out 16 hits and scored seven runs in the fourth inning to pull away from the Lady Scots. Morgan Stephens went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Rams. Aline Uehara added three runs batted in and Breanne Vencil had two more for Bluefield.
Courtney Wagoner had a pair of hits for Covenant, but the Lady Scots managed just five as a team in the game.
Uehara (1-0) got the pitching win for Bluefield as she went all five innings and struck out seven. Ellie Groenendyk (0-1) went two innings for Covenant and gets the loss.
Game Two: Bluefield 10, Covenant 9
Bluefield went ahead 10-2, on the strength of seven runs in the fourth inning, but the Lady Scots' bats came to life as they nearly came all the way back.
Trailing 10-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Covenant got two runs and then added three more in the fifth.
Hannah Rogers (0-1) gets the loss for Covenant as she went three innings. Morgan Meismer (1-0) picks up the victory for Bluefield.
Covenant will be back in action on Tuesday on Lookout Mountain when they host Point. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
