LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Led by 14 points and seven rebounds from Alexis Storteboom and a strong overall defensive effort, the Covenant women's basketball routed visiting Sewanee 61-40 on Wednesday night inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
Covenant improves to 2-1 on the season, while Sewanee drops to 1-2 overall.
As part of "White-Out" Night for the home opening basketball contests, the Scots fed off the energy generated by the home faithful. Covenant limited Sewanee to 26.4 percent (14-of-53) shooting from the field while scoring 31 points off 28 Tigers giveaways.
Storteboom led the offensive attack as she was 7-of-11 from the field to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman Aleigha Williams tallied 10 points and four rebounds. Jessie Blankenship and Kiaira Cooper each had nine points with Cooper dished out a game-high five assists.
Covenant got off to a cold start shooting, but still never trailed in the contest. A Blankenship layup with 14:07 left in the first half gave the Scots an 8-0 lead. That margin would grow to 23-11 late in the period after Cooper knocked down a 3-pointer. Sewanee would score the final four points of the half, but Covenant went into the break with a 23-15 advantage.
In the second half, the Scots turned the pressure up even more as they forced 16 second-half turnovers. Covenant built its lead to 37-20 on another Blankenship layup, assisted by Katie Leverette, and the Scots would cruise from there.
Covenant took its largest lead of the game at 25 points at 61-36 after a free throw from Rachel Price. in the final seconds of the contest.
Savannah Rose was the only Sewanee player on double figures scoring with 10 points. Kayla Sewell led all players with nine rebounds while collecting six points.
Covenant shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the floor, but just 5-of-18 from behind the 3-point line. The Scots held a 22-12 edge in points in the paint and a huge 31-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Covenant will have a chance to avenge its only loss of the season on Saturday when Millsaps comes to Lookout Mountain. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Millsaps defeated Covenant 82-53 last Saturday in the Berry College Classic.
