LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Freshman Aleigha Williams scored 18 points, but it was not enough for the Covenant women's basketball team as they fell to visiting Millsaps 62-47 on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
Covenant drops to 2-2 overall, while Millsaps goes to 3-1. It was the second meeting between the two schools in a week. Millsaps won both contests.
Williams was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult day for the Scots. The freshman went 7-of-13 from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line on the afternoon. Morgan Woodward tallied eight points, nine rebounds and three assists. Katie Leverette came off the bench to score eight points and grab four rebounds.
Leading scorer Jessie Blankenship was limited to four points, but did pull down eight rebounds for Covenant.
Velvet Johnson led the Majors' attack with 19 points, 17 of which came in the first half. Miah Brooks had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points. Samantha Perez poured in 17 points with six assists and four rebounds.
Covenant got off to a good start as Williams drained a 3-pointer at the 17:30 mark of the first half to give the Scots a 3-0 lead. Williams would score the first six for the Scots as they led 6-0 over three-and-a-half minutes into the contest.
Millsaps would find its footing as they seized the lead at 9-8 on a Jonhson jumper with 13:27 left in the half. The Majors controlled the rest of the period and Covenant went cold from the field. Millsaps went into the halftime break with a 38-25 lead.
In the second half, Covenant would trim its deficit to single digits on a couple occasions, but would not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Covenant connected on 33.3 percent (19-of-57) from the field and 9-of-20 (45 percent) from downtown. The Scots did record assists on 12 of the 19 made baskets. Millsaps shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) from the floor but outrebounded Covenant 50-32 and held a 36-18 edge in points in the paint.
Covenant is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Atlanta for a contest with Oglethorpe. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
