MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Facing opponents from the North division of the USA South for the first time this season, the Covenant volleyball team split its two matches on Saturday afternoon at Maryville College.
Covenant swept the first match against Ferrum (25-21, 25-12, 27-25) and dropped a close match against Averett in four sets (25-27, 19-25, 25-17, 15-25).
Cora Schoeder led the Lady Scots with 16 kills and Chelsea VanDyk provided seven more with an assist and a block assist. Anna Swain led the defense with 21 digs while Estes Carlson added 13 more with four service aces. Stephanie Kirkpatrick logged 35 assists and two service aces. Swain and Hannah Rogers also had six kills apiece.
Covenant held a 44-30 advantage in kills and both teams finished with 12 errors.
Ferrum was led by Rachel Stratton and Jordan Link who had 13 and 8 kills respectively.
In thesecond match, Covenant was led by VanDyk with 15 kills, two solo blocks, and four block assists. Schoeder registered nine kills with a block assist and chipped in on defense with 12 digs. Carlson led the defense with 27 digs while having three assists and two service aces. Swain added eight kills to the offense and Kirkpatrick had 29 assists with a solo block.
Averett was led by Allison Sparks with 21 kills and two block assists. Sarah Sparks added 12 kills and two solo blocks with three block assists. Nicole Barringer led the Cougers with 54 assists.
The Cougers held a 59-47 edge in kills but had 26 errors to Covenant's 10.
Covenant moves to 10-8 overall and 3-3 inside the USA South.
Covenant will have a week off before its next matches on Saturday, October 12. The Lady Scots will play Greensboro and Mary Baldwin in Greensboro, N.C.
