GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After a week off from competition, the Covenant volleyball team took to the court again on Saturday in a quad-match hosted by Greensboro College. The Lady Scots took down the host Pride 3-1 (25-12, 24-26, 28-26, 25-18) in the day's first match before dispatching Mary Baldwin in three sets (25-15, 25-8, 25-10).
Covenant improves to 12-8 overall and 5-3 within the USA South Athletic Conference with the victories.
In the first match, Chelsea VanDyk continued her stellar play this season with 19 kills with a hitting percentage of .400. As a team, Covenant had 62 kills and attacked at a .233 clip.
Hannah Rogers added 16 kills, four assists, three service aces and five digs while Cora Schroeder and Caroline Cone had nine kills apiece. Schroeder also had 16 digs. Stephanie Kirkpatrick also had a solid performance with 35 assists, 18 digs and five kills. Estes Carlson tallied 18 digs.
Covenant cruised in the first set as they led by as many as 15 points at 23-8. Greensboro rallied to take the second game after Covenant held a 23-20 advantage. But the Lady Scots had the final answer in the final two sets as they were able to eke out a 28-26 game three win handling the Pride in the fourth set.
The day's second match was against a winless Mary Baldwin squad. VanDyk again led the Lady Scots with eight kills to go along with four block solos and two block assists. Kirkpatrick had 17 assists and eight digs. Schroeder chipped in seven kills and seven digs with three service aces. Carlson led the Covenant defense with nine digs.
Head coach Joanna Ehman was able to play all 12 players in the match as the Lady Scots eased past the Fighting Squirrels.
Covenant begins a tough week coming up with a match against rival Maryville on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. inside Barnes PE Center. Covenant will also host a quad-match next Saturday.
