Women's Soccer Win Streak Snapped at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Covenant women's soccer team took on USA South defending champion Averett in a key conference battle on Friday afternoon. The host Cougars tallied two first half goals as they would go on to claim a 2-0 victory over Covenant.

The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Lady Scots (8-8-1, 6-3-1 USA South) as well as their consecutive scoreless minutes streak. Covenant had not allowed an opponent to score in 414 minutes of game play heading into Friday's match.

Even with the defeat, Covenant is still in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference standings. The Lady Scots are knotted with Greensboro and Meredith for the final spot to host a first round USA South tournament match next Saturday.

Averett (11-4-1, 8-1-1 USA South) got on the board first in the 20th minute when Felicia Pajamaki found the back of the net, assisted by Sandra Johansson and Jennie Nilsson, to make it 1-0. The Cougars would add a second score just a few minutes later when Johansson placed her shot into the upper right corner of the net for her 16th goal of the year giving the home team a 2-0 edge.

Covenant, playing without numerous key players due to injuries, battled hard but could manage only two shots on the day as Averett held a 20-2 advantage in that category. Rachel Buys and Annie Sostok each took one shot for Covenant.

Hannah Bales made six saves for Covenant, while Amanda Urban made two for the Cougars.

Covenant will look to get back on track on Saturday when they travel to face USA South foe William Peace. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
