LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Sophomore Jessica Rowe found the perfect way to begin a weekend of Homecoming soccer at Covenant.
The local product of Lookout Mountain gave the the Covenant women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Methodist with her game-winning score in the 101st minute of play.
The win is an important one for Covenant as they move to 6-7-1 overall, but improve to 4-2-1 inside the USA South. The win also moves the Lady Scots into a virtual tie for third place in the conference standings. Methodist drops to 5-6-1 and 3-3 in leauge play.
The second overtime had just begun when Rowe dribbled through the Methodist defense and got her shot just past the outstretched arms of Monarchs keeper Taylor Ross into the lower right side of the net. The goal was her first of the season and second of her collegiate career and gave way to a rush of teammates ready to mob her.
The match was a defensive struggle throughout. Covenant took just two shots on goal, the other coming from Andrea Hunt, while being outshot 14-10 overall. Covenant keeper Hannah Bales made seven saves to record the shutout victory. Ross tallied just one save for Methodist.
Covenant will take to the pitch again on Saturday evening when they host North Carolina Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. with the men playing immediately after. Fireworks will conlcude the evening's Homecoming festivities following the men's game.
