WALESKA, Ga. -- Going out of conference for a mid-week match, the Covenant volleyball team struggled to find rhythm as the Lady Scots were defeated by NAIA-member Reinhardt 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 26-24) on Tuesday night.
Covenant drops to 9-7 overall while Reinhardt, a member of Covenant's former conference the Appalachian Athletic Conference, improves to 8-4.
The Lady Scots were led statistically by Chelsea VanDyk's nine kills and .412 hitting percentage to go along with four block assists. Hannah Rogers had a team-best 10 kills while Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 25 assists, nine digs and five kills.
Defensively, Estes Carlson led Covenant with 10 digs.
Covenant fell behind early in the first set 9-2. The Lady Scots rallied to cut the deficit to 9-7 on a VanDyk kill, but Reinhardt would pull away for the 25-18 game win. In the second set, Covenant rallied from an 11-4 deficit to take an 18-17 lead after a Kelsey Mathis kill. But again the host Eagles had the final scoring run as they secured eight of the final 10 points of the game.
The third set saw each team go on significant runs. Covenant took a 17-14 lead after scoring five straight capped by a Rogers kill. Reinhardt would seize the lead again with a 7-1 scoring spurt for a 21-18 edge. After a Covenant timeout, the Lady Scots rallied with five straight points for a 23-21 lead. Much like the second set, though, Reinhardt would make the final run as they took five of the final six points of the match.
Denise De Vine had 21 kills and 12 digs to lead the Eagles. Sam Croce tallied 39 assists in the victory.
Covenant will jump back into USA South play on Saturday with two matches in Maryville, Tenn., against Ferrum (12 p.m.) and Averett (2 p.m.).
