LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- 14 different Covenant men's basketball players scored as the Scots cruised to an 84-49 victory over Johnson University on Friday night in the second game of the Covenant College Classic.
Colton McGriff led Covenant (6-4) with 13 points while grabbing five rebounds. Sam Bowman and T.J. Cox each had 10 points with Cox dishing out six assists. The Scots shot better than 50 percent (39-77) for the contest and outrebounded the smaller Johnson squad 46-21. Covenant also handed out 18 assists as a team.
The Scots jumped out to a 14-3 lead after a Bowman jumper with 15:50 left in the first half and Covenant would never look back. The Scots took a 25-point lead at 48-23 going into halftime. 13 different Covenant players had already scored by halftime.
In the second half, Covenant would extend its lead to as many as 35 points as they claimed a second straight win.
Joey Danek and Bryant Engbers tied for the team-lead in rebounds with seven, while both scored six points off the bench.
Johnson (1-12) was led offensively by Tyler Grffin's 20-point effort on 7-of-21 shooting. Cody Wagner knocked down three 3-pointers and tallied 19 points in the loss.
The 35-point win is the largest margin of victory for Covenant since the Scots defeated Virginia Intermont 121-84, a 37-point win, on February 9, 2008.
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they host the fourth and final game of the Covenant College Classic against Hiwassee College. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. The Lady Scots are also in action against Wesleyan College at 2 p.m. Crown College and Johnson University will play the middle game of the day at 4 p.m.
