LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Maryville's Spencer Peake knocked down a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in the game and that propelled the visiting Scots to a 48-47 win over the Covenant men's basketball team on Wednesday night.
Covenant drops to 11-8 overall with the loss, while Maryville improves to 8-11 on the season.
Colton McGriff led Covenant with 10 points, while Rosbie Mutcherson and Jon DeVries each had nine. DeVriess added a team-high six rebounds. T.J. Cox dished out three assists.
Maryville's attack was led by Jaumonee Byrd who poured in a game-high 13 points. Oscar Butler had eight points and eight rebounds and Christian Ford handed out six assists.
After a sluggish first half that saw both teams struggle to make shots, Maryville held a 22-21 halftime edge. Nate Frierson gave Covenant a spark off the bench as he contributed five points in the half as Covenant trimmed a 10-point deficit down to a single point.
In the second half, Covenant scored the first six points, capped by a 3-pointer from McGriff, that gave the home Scots a 27-22 lead. Maryville responded with an 8-0 scoring run to regain the lead at 30-27 with 15:13 left.
A Cox 3-pointer with 3:18 left gave Covenant the lead again at 42-40. The teams would trade baskets over the next couple of minutes until Peake drained his 3-ball from the top of the circle that gave Maryville the lead for good. McGriff was fouled on Covenant's next possession, but he missed the front-end of a bonus free-throw and Maryville escaped with the win.
Covenant connected on just 39.2 percent (20-51) of its shots, while Maryville made 44.7 percent (21-47). Covenant held a small 34-29 rebounding edge.
Covenant returns to action next Monday (Feb. 4) on the road against Emory & Henry at 7 p.m. Covenant defeated the Wasps 66-60 on Nov. 16.
