Maryville Snaps Scots' Win Streak

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team saw its longest winning streak in recent memory come to an end on Wednesday night. Covenant went on the road at perennial power Maryville and, in a battle of Scots, the host Scots came away with an 80-61 win.

The loss for Covenant is its first setback since December and the Scots stand at 10-6 overall. Maryville, Covenant's future conference foe in the USA South, improves to 7-8 for the season.

Maryville never trailed in the contest as Covenant could not get on track offensively to keep pace. The only tie in the game came early on as Colton McGriff converted a layup to tie the score at 2-2. A 3-pointer from Maryville's Jose Agosto on the host Scots' next possession gave them a 5-2 edge, a lead they would not relinquish.

After Maryville raced out to an early seven-point lead in the first half, Covenant cut its deficit to just one point at 16-15 on a Sam Bowman jumper at the 11:49 mark of the first half. From there, Maryville outscored Covenant 28-11 the rest of the period to go ahead 44-26 at halftime.

In the second half, Covenant could only get as close as 17 points late in the period as Maryville cruised to the win.

Jon DeVries led Covenant with 11 points, while Joey Danek added 10 points and six rebounds. T.J. Cox chipped in nine points. Covenant struggled shooting as they connected on 39.7 percent (21-56) and made just one 3-pointer. Covenant did make 14-of-21 free-throws on the night.

Four players scored in double figures for Maryville led by Oscar Butler and Jaumonee Byrd who each contributed 15 points. Agosto had 12 points and Christian Ford tallied 10 points and four assists. Maryville was able to make 45.9 percent (28-61) from the floor, including eight 3-pointers.

Covenant will look to begin a new winning streak on Saturday at home when they take on Florida Christian at 3 p.m. Covenant was defeated by Florida Christian 81-75 on the road last season.
