LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Mae Mae Johnson first goal of the season in the 61st minute of play was enough to propel the Covenant women's soccer team past Birmingham Southern 1-0 on Tuesday night at Scotland Yard.
The win for Covenant is its seventh in a row. The Lady Scots (7-1-1) have not lost since losing 4-0 to then-No. 1 Messiah College on August 31 to open the season.
Johnson first score of the season came at clutch moment for the Lady Scots. Johnson received a pass from Mo Cross then took a shot from just beyond the box and found the back corner of the net for the goal.
Birmingham Southern had an advantage in shots on goal (6-4), but could not get one by Covenant keeper Hannah Bales who saved all six, four of which were attempted in the first half. The Panthers outshot the Lady Scots 11-7 overall.
Kathryn Allison, Bethany Logan, and Cross each had a shot on goal for Covenant. Bailey Kimbell and Amanda Babbin took two shots on goal apiece with Kelly Craft and Hillary Dreyfus taking one each for the Panthers (3-4-1)
Birmingham Southern keeper Richelle Byrd made three saves on four chances. Both Covenant and Birmingham Southern took two corner kicks.
Covenant returns to the field on Saturday, September 29 when they host Salem College to Scotland Yard. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
