ROME, Ga. -- The Lady Scots hit the road on Tuesday night to face Berry College in a rematch of the opening game of the year that was won by Berry. Although the Lady Scots hung with the Lady Vikings, Covenant was unable to come up with the win as Berry pulled out a 74-60 victory.
A rough start to the game didn't help the Lady Scots as Berry took a quick 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of play. Berry extended its lead to 13-1 before Covenant recovered to bring the score to 18-11 thanks in large part to two 3-pointers from Ruth Gibson.
Berry rattled off an 8-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Alexa Evans that made it 26-11. But Covenant then put together one of its best scoring outbreaks of the season as they outscored Berry 16-0 over a five minute stretch to gain a 27-26 lead. Margaret Cross buried two 3-pointers and made a layup during the run, while Jessie Blankenship added six points of her own. The Lady Vikings responded, though, and took a 39-31 lead into halftime.
Berry scored the first seven points of the second half and limited the Lady Scots offense to zero points through the first five minutes of the period. Hannah Craft hit a 3-pointer to break the cold streak for Covenant and bring them to within 46-34 with 14:27 remaining. Covenant came no closer than that as the Lady Vikings led by double digits for the rest of the night.
Blankenship led all scorers with 21 points while coming up with seven rebounds. Gibson tallied 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Christine Core added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Morgan Woodward had five assists and five steals for Covenant (5-19, 4-11 GSAC).
Mel McLean led Berry (8-14) with 19 points off the bench. Evans chipped in 11 points for the Lady Vikings.
Covenant plays its next game against Salem College on Saturday, February 25 at 2 p.m. inside Barnes Physical Education Center for the final regular season game.
