DECATUR, Ga. -- Behind a great defensive effort, the Agnes Scott Scotties came away with a 55-31 win over Covenant Saturday afternoon in GSAC action. With the win, Agnes Scott moves to 8-15 overall and 7-9 in conference play, while the Lady Scots fall to 5-18 and 4-11 in GSAC games.
Covenant took possession right from the start as Jessie Blankenship connected on a jumper just moments into the contest. Agnes Scott quickly retaliated scoring seven straight points of its own before another Blankenship jumper made it 7-4 at the 16:56 mark of the first half.
Agnes Scott then took control of the game with a 12-0 run, capped by a Genefine Sapateh jumper that made it 23-5 with 5:04 left in the half. The Lady Scots would go on a spurt of their own as they outscored the Scotties 12-4 in the final five minutes of the half behind five points each from Christine Core and Margaret Cross. The run for Covenant cut its deficit to 27-18 going into halftime.
A quick basket from Morgan Woodward to begin the second half sliced the the Scotties lead to 27-20 within the first minute. But that was as close as Covenant would get as Agnes Scott blew the game open by going on a 14-2 run over a six minute span in the second half. The Scotties would lead by as many as 26 points late in the contest.
Agnes Scott was led by Sapateh who achieved a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while also collecting six steals. Tiffany Jones and Arielle Register each added 13 points.
Cross led Covenant with eight points and also grabbed three rebounds. Core and Blankenship tied with seven points each. Blankenship also came up with seven total rebounds and two blocked shots. Ruth Gibson dished out two assists to go along with a block and a steal.
Covenant will play its next game against Berry College in Rome, Ga., on Tuesday, February 21. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
