DEMOREST, Ga. -- Wednesday night Covenant's women's basketball team faced Great South foe Piedmont College in a rough game that ended in a loss 86-43. Behind Sada Wheeler's near triple-double, Piedmont (20-4, 12-3 GSAC) took control of the game from the start. Covenant drops to 5-17 overall and 4-10 in the GSAC.
13 seconds into the game Wheeler, who scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, made a layup and was followed by another seven points to take a 9-0 lead on Covenant. After Covenant had cut the Piedmont lead to 18-11 on a jumper from Ruth Gibson, the Lady Lions went on an 11-0 run. Going into halftime, the Lady Scots trailed 37-23.
Morgan Woodward started the second half with a jumper to bring Covenant to within 37-25. But Piedmont answered with a 10-0 run of its own to take full control. The Lady Lions would lead by as many as 47 late in the second half.
The only drama left at the end of the game was whether or not Wheeler would complete a triple-double. The forward accumulated nine blocked shots on the night, coming up just one short of a triple-double.
Jessie Blankenship came close to Wheeler with 17 points and four rebounds. Christine Core had six points and two steals for the night. Woodward added five points, four rebounds, and a team-high three assists.
Covenant plays its next game against Agnes Scott College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 18 in Decatur, Ga.
