Wesleyan Rallies in 2nd Half to Beat Lady Scots

MACON, Ga. -- Lindsay Haggerty scored 29 points to lead the Wesleyan Pioneers to a 54-42 win over the Covenant Lady Scots on Saturday afternoon in Macon, Ga. The Lady Scots won the previous meeting of the two teams 42-38 back in January. Covenant falls to 5-16 overall and 4-9 in conference play. Wesleyan improves to 7-11 and 5-10 in league play.

The first half started off slowly other than a quick 3-pointer from Ruth Gibson. In the next few minutes, Jessie Blankenship connected on three jumpers extending the Covenant lead to six points. The Lady Scots took their largest lead of the game at 19-6 after a Margaret Cross 3-pointer with 8:29 left in the half. Covenant would go into the halftime break with a 23-16 lead.

In the second half, Cross gave Covenant a 26-18 lead with another 3-pointer at the 18:28 mark. But Wesleyan would rattle off a 16-0 run over the next six minutes, capped by a trey from Haggerty. Covenant finally snapped its cold streak when Cross knocked down a jumper that made it 34-28 in favor of the Pioneers.

Covenant came within three points of Wesleyan at 36-33 thanks to another 3-pointer by Cross and jump shot by Blankenship. But that would be as close as the Lady Scots could get the rest of the way.

Blankenship had yet another double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. It is the forward's fifth double-double of the year. Cross also had a great game earning 14 points and three steals. The Lady Scots made 35.9 percent (14-of-39) from the floor and outrebounded Wesleyan 44-29, but 35 turnovers proved costly.

Besides scoring a game-high 29 points, Haggerty also grabbed seven rebounds and collected five steals. Erinn Williams was the only other Wesleyan player in double digits with 11 points and six rebounds. The Pioneers shot just 10.7 percent (3-of-18) in the first half, but made 12-of-24 shots in the second half.

Covenant plays its next game against Piedmont College on Wednesday, February 15 in Demorest, Ga. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
