LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Maryville College Lady Scots rolled into a foggy Lookout Mountain on Wednesday night and pulled out a 66-42 win over the host Covenant Lady Scots. The loss for Covenant drops them to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in Great South play. Maryville, meanwhile, improves to 11-6 and 7-1 in conference play.
Margaret Cross led Covenant in scoring with 10 points, but it was not nearly enough on this night. The Lady Scots managed just 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field and were outrebounded 46-24 by the visitors. Jessie Blankenship pulled down nearly half of those rebounds as she had 11 total to go along with six points.
Covenant took a brief 4-2 lead on a Blankenship layup at the 17:12 mark of the first half, but Maryville quickly regained the lead on their next possession with a 3-pointer by Lauren Burnett. That triple began a 12-0 scoring run for Maryville that gave them a 10-point lead, one they would keep the rest of the night.
Trailing 34-18 at halftime, Covenant would not score for the first three minutes of the second half and that allowed Maryville to extend their lead out to 25 points at 43-18 with just under 17 minutes left in the game. Maryville would lead by as many as 29 points in the half.
Three players scored in double figures for the visitors led by Janell Menard's 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Burnett added a dozen points and Kiera Payne poured in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Covenant will take to the road for their next game against Great South member LaGrange College on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. LaGrange defeated the Lady Scots earlier this year 97-81.
