LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Covenant went on the road on Saturday afternoon to take on the LaGrange College Lady Panthers. LaGrange (14-6, 10-2 GSAC) beat the Lady Scots 97-81 earlier this season and on Saturday LaGrange beat Covenant soundly 72-45. Covenant now stands at 5-14 and 4-7 in the GSAC.
In the opening minutes, the Lady Panthers took a quick 12-4 lead. LaGrange then extended their lead thanks to a 9-0 scoring run that made it 26-11. Jessie Blankenship's jumper cut the LaGrange lead down to 26-16 with 5:32 left in the half, but the home team would surge ahead by 19 points at halftime.
Covenant came out of the locker room at halftime and scored five straight points on a Margaret Cross 3-pointer and another Blankenship basket to slice the deficit to 39-25. LaGrange had the answer, however, as they went on a 13-0 run that gave the Lady Panthers a 57-31 lead midway through the second half.
Covenant stayed with LaGrange as far as accuracy. Both Covenant and LaGrange shot in the 38 percent range for the game. The difference was that LaGrange simply shot more as they attempted 20 more field goals than Covenant.
Blankenship led the scoring for Covenant, and tied LaGrange's Stefanie Schuck, with 18 points and also came up with seven rebounds. Christine Core scored 10 points off the bench and fought hard on defense earning four steals. Hannah Craft grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists.
LaGrange had two players reach double figures with Schuck leading with way. Katie Covington added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Panthers.
Covenant returns to action on Wednesday, February 8 against Huntingdon College at Barnes Physical Education Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
