LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Trailing 34-25 at halftime, the Covenant men's basketball team regrouped in the second half to outscore visiting Oglethorpe 43-25 as the Scots came away with a 68-59 win Saturday afternoon.
The win for Covenant snaps a brief two-game losing streak and also gives Oglethorpe its first defeat of the season. Covenant moves to 2-3 overall, while Oglethorpe drops to 5-1.
Seeing his first action of the season, Jon DeVries made the most of his opportunity as he scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Scots. DeVries was perfect from the free-throw line making 10-of-10 and was 4-of-5 from the field. Colton McGriff added 12 points and nine rebounds in a reserve role, while Callum Sears had eight points.
Oglethorpe was led by Branden Jovaag who scored 18 points, including 15 points on five 3-pointers in the first half. Drew Patrick had nine points, while Alex Davis and Tyler Courson each had eight. Sam Purdy led Oglethorpe with eight rebounds.
Oglethorpe controlled much of the first half. The Stormy Petrels led by as many as 12 points late in the half, thanks in large part to Jovaag's hot shooting. Covenant got two DeVries free-throws with less than a minute left in the first half to cut its deficit to 34-25 at halftime.
Covenant outscored Oglethorpe 14-5 to begin the second half as Sam Bowman's layup with 13:52 remaining tied the score at 39-39. Oglethorpe would answer and regain a six-point edge at 48-42 after Courson made all three free-throws after a DeVries flagrant foul with 11:21 left.
The Scots responded with an 8-0 scoring run of their own, with DeVries scoring four points, to gain a 50-48 lead. Oglethorpe was able to cut the Covenant margin to one at 56-55 on a Purdy deep jumper with 4:11 remaining.
In a game of scoring spurts, Covenant would go on one final run to seal the win. The Scots went on a 9-0 run, including a clutch 3-pointer from Sears, over a stretch of almost four minutes to go ahead 65-55.
Covenant connected on just 36.4 percent (20-55) from the field, but knocked down 26-of-36 free-throws that made the biggest difference in the game. Oglethorpe made 25 percent (21-60) from the floor and 8-of-26 from behind the 3-point line.
The Scots are back in action on Tuesday, December 4 as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The men take on Sewanee at 8 p.m., after the women play at 6 p.m.
