LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team used a 30-3 scoring run in the second half and drained 10 3-pointers en route to a 76-55 win over visiting Oglethorpe on Saturday afternoon.
Haley Soles led Covenant (4-1) with 17 points as she connected on five 3-pointers. Jessie Blankenship added 15 points, but saw her double-double streak end at four as she grabbed three rebounds. Ruth Gibson knocked down a pair of 3s to score 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Covenant got off to a slow start, falling behind 12-2 in the first five minutes of the contest. The Lady Scots would rattle off 12 straight points, capped by Alexis Storteboom's layup at the 12:55 mark of the first half, to gain a 14-12 lead. Soles had two 3-pointers during the run. Covenant would go into halftime up 38-30.
In the second half, Oglethorpe shrunk its deficit to only two points at 42-40 after a pair of Sarah Giles free-throws. Covenant then put together a run that would secure them the win.
The Lady Scots outscored Oglethorpe 30-3 over the next 12-plus minutes of action to go ahead 72-43. During the scoring run, Covenant received contributions from up and down the bench. A Liz Dougherty 3-pointer with 4:17 remaining capped the run.
Oglethorpe (2-4) was led by Giles who registered a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots. Kalin Williams chipped in seven points and three assists.
Kiaira Cooper led Covenant with 10 rebounds, while Morgan Woodward dished out five assists and grabbed six boards. As a team, Covenant had 21 assists on 30 made field goals.
For the game, Covenant connected on 46.9 percent (30-64) from the field, 10-of-21 from behind the 3-point line, and outrebounded Oglethorpe 48-39. Oglethorpe was limited to 31.9 percent (23-72) shooting and misfired on all 27 3-point attempts.
Covenant is back in action on Tuesday, December 4 as part of a doubleheader with the men. The women take on Sewanee at 6 p.m., then the men play at 8 p.m.
