Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Scots Move to 5-1 With 63-47 Win Over Sewanee

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Another night, another strong performance from the Covenant women's basketball team. Four players had at least nine points and the Lady Scots used a solid defensive effort as Covenant defeated Sewanee 63-47 on Tuesday night.

The win moves the Lady Scots to 5-1, one of their best starts since the 2007-08 season when Covenant began the year 9-2. Sewanee drops to 2-3 for the season.

Jessie Blankenship had 14 points and five rebounds, while Ruth Gibson had seven steals and five rebounds to go along with her 10 points. Kiaira Cooper nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Meagan Kreisel added nine points and five rebounds for the Lady Scots in the win. Haley Soles chipped in seven points and three assists.

Sewanee was led by Kayla Sewell's 12 points and seven rebounds. Clarissa Medley tallied eight points and nine rebounds.

Covenant took an early 4-0 lead on a Gibson jumper and the Lady Scots were off and running for the rest of the night. Cooper's layup with 4:59 left in the half gave Covenant its biggest lead of the period at 24-8. Sewanee would chip away at Covenant's lead as the Lady Scots led 28-20 at halftime.

In the second half, Sewanee would shrink the Lady Scots' margin to just three points at 28-25 on a pair of Sewell free-throws. Much like Saturday against Oglethorpe, Covenant would make a run that would give them much more breathing room.

The Lady Scots went on a 16-3 scoring spurt, capped by a Kreisel layup, to go ahead 44-28 with 13:23 remaining in the contest. Covenant would lead by as many as 18 points late in the second half as they cruised to the win.

Covenant limited Sewanee to just 25 percent (12-48) shooting from the floor and 5-of-26 from 3-point territory. The Lady Scots also struggled shooting making 38.6 percent (27-70), but converted 31 Sewanee turnovers into 28 points.

Covenant will take to the road this weekend. The Lady Scots play at Maryville College on Friday at 6 p.m. before going further north on Saturday to take on Emory & Henry College at 6 p.m.
