ROME, Ga. -- Despite another double-double from Jessie Blankenship, the Covenant women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday night as the Berry Lady Vikings claimed a 67-50 win.
In the losing effort, Blankenship recorded her fourth straight double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Haley Soles was the only other Covenant player in double digits with 10 points.
Berry was led by Chanlir Segarra's 20 points and seven assists.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, but the host Lady Vikings managed to have a 26-19 lead at the break.
In the second half, Covenant's offense came to life as the Lady Scots cut their deficit to 42-38 after a Liz Dougherty layup at the 9:54 mark of the half. Covenant hung tight with Berry as Alexis Storteboom knocked down a pair of free-throws with 7:31 remaining to make it 49-44 in favor of the home team.
Berry would put the game away with a 14-1 scoring run over the next five minutes, capped by an Allison Lawrence layup, to go ahead 63-45 with 2:40 left in the contest.
Besides Segarra's 20-point performance, Megan Walsh and Lawrence each had double-doubles. Walsh scored 16 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, while Lawrence chipped in 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Berry (2-3) outrebounded the Lady Scots 56-45, but were held to 34.4 percent shooting (22-64) by Covenant's defense. The Lady Scots also struggled shooting as they connected on 28.4 percent (21-74) of their shots.
Covenant (3-1) also got solid contributions from Kiaira Cooper and Ruth Gibson. Cooper tallied seven points and 10 rebounds with Gibson adding eight points and six rebounds.
Covenant will take on Oglethorpe University at home on Saturday. The women play at 2 p.m. with the men following at 4 p.m.
