Scots Fall 60-54 at Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. -- Sam Bowman scored 12 points off the bench, but the host Millsaps Majors prevailed 60-54 over the Covenant Scots on Tuesday night. Covenant drops to 1-2 on the year, while Millsaps improves to 2-1.

Bowman played 18 minutes and made 3-of-7 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Callum Sears, Rosbie Mutcherson, and T.J. Cox each had eight points for the Scots who struggled shooting all night. Colton McGriff recorded a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four points. Chris Boyd tallied four points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Covenant fell behind 18-7 in the first 11 minutes of the game before shrinking the deficit to 20-15 on a Teron Ferguson jumper at the 5:40 mark of the half. The Scots would trail by just three points at halftime, 26-23.

Boyd gave Covenant its first lead since the early minutes of the contest with a jumper in the first minute of the second half to put the Scots up 27-26. But that lead was short-lived as the Majors would grab the lead for good with a Sterling Thomas layup just moments later.

Millsaps would build its lead to as many as 13 points late in the second half before Covenant mounted a late rally. Mutcherson and Cox combined to score 10 points in the final minute of play, but Millsaps made enough free-throws to claim the victory.

Nick Cortese led Millsaps with 15 points while grabbing five rebounds. Tully Gilligan added 12 points and four steals with Brandon Allison chipping in nine points and nine rebounds.

Both teams struggled to make shots all night. Covenant shot 34 percent (18-53) and connected on two 3-pointers. The Majors made 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field and 18.9 percent (3-16) from behind the 3-point arc.

Millsaps was able to convert on Covenant turnovers as the Majors turned 22 Scots giveaways into 22 points. Covenant forced 15 Millsaps turnovers, but scored just 10 points off them.

Covenant will break for Thanksgiving before returning to action on Wednesday, November 28 against LaGrange College at 8 p.m. inside Barnes Phyisical Education Center.
