LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Paced by four players in double figures, the Covenant Scots shook off a tough road loss in less than 24 hours to beat visiting Emory & Henry College 66-60 in front of a packed Barnes Physical Education Center.
300 free t-shirts were given away at the entrance and fans came ready to cheer on their home team. The Scots didn't dissapoint.
Callum Sears led the Covenant attack with 13 points, while Colton McGriff had 12 points and eight rebounds. T.J. Cox and freshman Chris Boyd each had 10 points off the bench.
Covenant jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead after a Rosbie Mutcherson jumper at the 18:27 mark of the first half. Emory & Henry seized the lead at 15-12 on a 3-pointer from Armando Murrell with 13:44 left in the half and the teams traded baskets for several minutes after.
The Scots gained some separation before halftime, though. Covenant took a 10-point lead after a Sears jumper with two minutes left in the half. Covenant would go into the break up six.
Much like the night before, the Scots cooled off in the second half. Emory & Henry's Malcolm Green and Murrell made back-to-back baskets to cap a 9-0 scoring run that gave the Wasps a 48-45 lead with 12:23 remaining.
The two teams again traded basket for basket until Bryant Engbers' 3-pointer with 7:10 left in the game gave Covenant a lead they would hold the rest of the way.
Covenant made 4-of-5 free-throws down the stretch to hold off a Wasps rally and give the Scots their first win of the season.
Green led Emory & Henry (0-1) with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Murrell added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Covenant shot 44.3 percent (27-61) from the field, while the visitors made 44.4 percent (24-54). Emory & Henry had a slight 35-34 rebounding edge.
Covenant returns to action on Tuesday, November 20 at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Tip-off is slated for 8:30 p.m.
