BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Covenant got a first half goal from Garrison Dale, but Birmingham Southern rallied to tie the score in the second half and after two overtime periods the match between the Scots and Panthers ended in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night in Birmingham.
The draw for Covenant (7-6-1) is the first of the season, while it is Birmingham Southern's (5-4-3) third such match.
Covenant got on the board first in the 23rd minute of play when Dale found the back of the net, with an assist form Danny Knight, to make it 1-0 Scots. The score for Dale is his fifth of the season, and third in the last three matches.
Birmingham Southern tied the score at 1-1 13 minutes into the second half thanks to a score from Brooks Busby. Busby headed in a pass from Emil Saevarsson to knot the score up.
In the first overtime period, Covenant's David Taaffe took the lone shot on goal for either team but Panthers keeper Alex Levinson was there to make the save in the 100th minute. Tyler Morrison had, perhaps, the best chance for either team in the second overtime but his shot just missed the mark and instead hit the post.
Birmingham Southern outshot Covenant 17-10, with a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Covenant keeper Shuler Polk made 10 saves on the night, while his counterpart Levinson tallied two saves.
Covenant returns to Scotland Yard on Saturday, October 13 when they take on Georgia Gwinnett College at 7:00 p.m.
