SEWANEE, Tenn -- Despite a strong second half performance from Colton McGriff, the Covenant Scots again found themselves on the losing end Wednesday night at Sewanee. Tyler Brown scored 21 points for the host Sewanee to propel the Tigers to a 63-51 win.
Covenant has lost eight straight contests now and their record falls to 4-9 for the season. Sewanee, meanwhile, improves their record to 6-4 with the victory.
McGriff scored 15 points in the second half to keep Covenant in the game. The Scots led 21-19 at the break, but Sewanee started the second half on a 10-2 scoring run to take a 29-23 lead with 17:11 remaining. McGriff connected on a short jumper then hit two free-throws on the following possession to cut the Tigers lead to 37-35. Sewanee's Valentino Bryant then scored on back-to-back trips to put the Tigers up seven at 42-35 with just under nine minutes to play.
Covenant was able to get the deficit back down to three points after a pair of Joey Danek free-throws, but six straight points by Brown made it 52-44 and again put the Scots in a difficult position. The Scots would not get as close as eight points the rest of the game.
McGriff scored a team-high 21 points on 9-for-17 shooting. Callum Sears added 12 points while Joey Danek tallied seven points with four rebounds. Covenant could shoot just 31.6 percent (18-57) and connected on four 3-pointers.
Bryant added 14 points for Sewanee to go along with Brown's team-high 21. Bryant also dished out five assists. Trent Williams and Brett Bouldin each had eight points for the Tigers.
Covenant will return to action on Jan. 9 when they travel to play Florida Christian. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
